Dr. Wendy Martinez has been serving as the Director of the Mathematical Statistics Research Center, Office of Survey Methods Research in the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) since the fall of 2011. Before that time, she spent twenty years working in several research positions throughout the Department of Defense. She held the position of Science and Technology Program Officer at the Office of Naval Research (ONR), where she established a multi-million-dollar research portfolio comprised of academia and industry performers developing data science products for the future Navy and Marine Corps. Prior to her tenure at ONR, Dr. Martinez conducted basic and applied research at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division.
Her areas of interest include computational statistics, exploratory data analysis, machine learning, text analysis, and data ethics. She is the lead author of three books on MATLAB and statistics that cover these areas, along with topics such as the bootstrap, Bayesian methods, spatial statistics, nonparametric regression, and more.
Dr. Martinez received her Ph.D. in Computational Sciences and Informatics with an emphasis on computational statistics at George Mason University in 1995. She completed a Master of Science degree in engineering at George Washington University in 1991 and a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and physics at Cameron University in 1989. She was not finished learning yet when she started at BLS, so she attended the Joint Program in Survey Methodology at the University of Maryland and received a Graduate Certificate in Survey Statistics in 2015.
Dr. Martinez was elected as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA) in 2006 and is an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. She was honored by the American Statistical Association when she received the ASA Founders Award at the Joint Statistical Meetings 2017 conference. Dr. Martinez is also proud and grateful to have served as the 2020 ASA President.
She continues to serve her profession. Dr. Martinez was elected as the 2023 chair of the ASA Justice Equity Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Outreach Group and the ASA Text Analysis Interest Group. She is a member of the Federal Committee on Statistical Methodology, where she established and leads two interest groups – one on geospatial data and one on computational statistics. She is the co-founder of R Govys (supported by the R Consortium) and leads the Inter-agency R Users Group. She is also a co-founder and the Coordinating Editor of Statistics Surveys.
