Gerhard Pilcher is the President and CEO of Elder Research, Inc., a 25-year-old firm that specializes in data analytics, which is headquartered in Charlottesville, VA with offices in Raleigh, Washington DC, Baltimore, New York City, and London, UK. Gerhard enjoys predictive analytics and data mining — especially related to the areas of Fraud Detection, Financial Risk Management, and Health Care — working with people, leading change, and managing complex projects to timely success. His work experience spans private, government, and international sectors.
Gerhard is coauthor of the popular book Mining Your Own Business that arms executives and senior managers to make better decisions based on discoveries from their organization’s data. The book is frequently recommended as a readable introduction to data science and a useful reference for specific, daily guidance and is used as a textbook for several graduate level courses, including Virginia Tech’s Executive MBA program.
Gerhard taught at Georgetown University as an adjunct faculty member in the Math and Statistics graduate degree program for five years while living in the DC area and is currently an adjunct faculty member at the University of California, Irvine teaching data strategy as part of a virtual graduate certificate program in Healthcare Informatics. He is also a frequently invited speaker at domestic and international conferences.
Gerhard serves on the Institute for Advanced Analytics Advisory Board, George Washington University’s Advisory Board for the Business Analytics graduate program, and on the George Mason Data Science Graduate Program Advisory Board. He serves on multiple company boards and is Chairman of the Board for three start-up companies he co-founded, two in the US and one in the UK. Gerhard was honored to be named to the NC State Computer Science Department’s “Hall of Fame” in 2017, its inaugural year.
